ACCESSIBILITY

Our Commitment to Accessibility

At the VSA, we are committed to inclusivity and diversity. Understanding and implementing the principles of this act are not just legal obligations but integral to our values and mission.

As part of our strategic commitment to ensure equity, diversity, and inclusion in our organization, and our requirements under the Accessible British Columbia Act, we aim to make our offices, employment practices, and services accessible and inclusive.

The Accessibility Act allows our organization to meet legal requirements and foster a culture of inclusivity and accessibility. By aligning our practices with the principles of the Act, we demonstrate our commitment to equity and accessibility for all individuals. Together, we can create a more inclusive society with equal access to opportunities and resources.
Our accessibility plan outlines how we will improve accessibility and inclusion in collaboration with our Accessibility Committee and through the feedback we receive from our employees and those we serve.

Frequently Asked Questions

People with disabilities have told us that barriers make it hard to experience full and equal participation in society. We need to understand the specific barriers people face to remove them.

We are asking for feedback on VSA’s programs and services to improve accessibility.

Your concerns will be reviewed and shared with the area of service you had trouble accessing. Your feedback may influence:
β€’ Future accessibility plans
β€’ What we do to prevent barriers in the future

You will not get a status update about your feedback. If you share your contact information, you may get a follow up request from us wanting to understand your experience better. If there are no questions, you may not be contacted.

We are using the definitions outlined in the Accessible British Columbia Act:
By β€œaccessibility” we mean β€œHow easily can this thing be reached, entered, or used by a person with a disability?
By β€œdisability” we mean the experience of not being able to equally and fully participate in or access something because of a β€œbarrier” and an β€œimpairment”.
An β€œimpairment” includes an impairment considered:
β€’ Physical
β€’ Sensory
β€’ Mental
β€’ Intellectual or cognitive
These impairments may be:
β€’ Permanent
β€’ Temporary
β€’ Episodic
By β€œbarrier” we mean anything that hinders someone with an impairment from easily accessing something or take part equally and/or fully.

β€’ Buildings with no wheelchair ramps at the entrances
β€’ Floors without wheelchair-accessible washrooms
β€’ Information that is hard to understand
β€’ Forms that are not available in a different form, like Braille or large print
β€’ Important videos without captioning or ASL alternatives
β€’ A VSA employee that uses language that is rude about your disability or difference

We want feedback from anyone interacting with the VSA who:
β€’ Experiences a barrier
β€’ Witnesses someone experiencing a barrier

We want to know the specific barriers people face when they are trying to:
β€’ Access a program, location or information we offer
β€’ Receive a service or support
We’re seeking:
β€’ Descriptions of experiences and how they impact you
β€’ Recommendations for how barriers can be removed

The questions in the feedback survey are optional. They are there to help you provide us with information about barriers. You can share as much or as little as you want.
If you do share your name and contact information, your identity will be known by the people who read it. What you share will never be held against you.
Any personal details you share will be kept safe as required under section 26(c) of the Freedom of information and Protection of Privacy Act.
